Guide · Daily Reminder System

The Daily Reminder System.

A phone can pull a man a hundred directions before breakfast. It can also call him back. Three reminders, set one time, and the day has an anchor at each end and one in the middle. A verse when you wake. A short check when the noise is loudest. A quiet look back before you sleep. Here is how to set them, and what to put inside them.

Set it up · about five minutes

  1. Open the reminder or alarm app already on your phone. On an iPhone that is Clock or Reminders. On Android it is Clock or Google Tasks. Any of them will do.
  2. Make three reminders and set each one to repeat every day.
  3. Name each reminder for one of the three anchors below. Paste the words into the note or the label so they show up on the screen when it goes off. You are reading them, not just hearing a chime.
  4. Set the times to near waking, near midday, and near bed. The times below are a starting point. Move them to fit your life.
  5. Let them run for two weeks without skipping. After two weeks they stop being reminders and start being rhythm.

Anchor One · Morning

A verse to point the day

Near 6:00 AM

Point the day before the world does. Read one line of Scripture before you read the news or the group chat. Pick one verse and keep it for a season, or set seven and let one land each day of the week.

Paste one, or rotate the week

  • Lamentations 3:22-23His mercies never come to an end. They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.
  • Psalm 143:8Let me hear in the morning of your steadfast love, for in you I trust. Make me know the way I should go.
  • Proverbs 3:5-6Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. He will make straight your paths.
  • Joshua 1:9Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.
  • Psalm 90:12Teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom.
  • Micah 6:8Do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with your God.
  • Psalm 5:3In the morning you hear my voice. In the morning I lay my requests before you and wait.

Anchor Two · Midday

A check when the day is loud

Near 12:00 PM

By noon the day has its own momentum. This is a hand on the shoulder that asks a plain question and waits for an honest answer. Ten seconds is enough. Rotate through these, or sit with one all week.

Ask one, honestly

  1. Where am I spending myself right now, and is it worth it?
  2. Am I present with the people in front of me, or somewhere else?
  3. What is one thing I can set right this afternoon?
  4. Have I moved my body or eaten anything real today?
  5. What am I carrying that I should hand to God before I carry it further?
1 Corinthians 16:13-14 Be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong. Let all that you do be done in love.

Anchor Three · Evening

A look back before sleep

Near 9:00 PM

Before the day closes, walk back through it. Not to keep score, but to see where God was and where you drifted. Three questions, answered in your head or in a notebook by the bed.

Answer these three

  1. Where did I see God today?
  2. Where did I miss it, and who do I need to make right with?
  3. What am I grateful for from today?

Then name one honest word you owe someone, and plan to say it tomorrow.

Psalm 4:8 In peace I will both lie down and sleep, for you alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety.
